Bilingual Welfare Service

The Bilingual Welfare Service provides assistance to people who are disadvantaged by language and cultural barriers. It offers casework and referrals for migrant and refugee families of non-English speaking backgrounds and other needy local residents.

The project also has a community development component, in which workers participate in the running of support groups, get involved in community activities and campaigns and liaise with other workers in the community to provide clients with education and information sessions.

The service is currently available in Vietnamese, Chinese, Lao, Thai and Assyrian languages. It is funded by the Department of Community Service with the following aims and objectives:

• To increase the availability and accessibility of services to people of non-English speaking backgrounds
• To facilitate the settlement of migrants and refugees by providing information assistance and support
• To facilitate cross cultural understanding in the community
• To encourage the involvement and participation of migrants and refugees in community activities
